Detta Kenzie | Folk Musician

It was a real pleasure to photograph Detta Kenzie for her new LP cover artwork on Dartmoor. For a contemporary folk artist whose music is rooted in tradition and landscape, a quiet valley where the West Dart runs through ancient oak woodland beneath the tors felt like the right setting for this shoot.

Detta Kenzie is an indie-folk singer and songwriter whose music, while often touched by traditional Celtic folk influences, is guided by a thoroughly modern and independent spirit. Her sound blends the richness of folk storytelling with elements of soul, cinematic minimalism and leftfield pop, creating music that is emotionally expansive, intimate and unmistakably her own.

Detta Kenzie | Album artwork in Devon

It was a fantastic experience to be commissioned to photograph singer/ songwriter  Detta Kenzie for her new LP cover artwork on Dartmoor. For a contemporary folk artist whose music is rooted in tradition and landscape, a quiet and secluded spot where the west Dart runs through the valley beside ancient stunted oak woodland and beneath the tors of Dartmoor National Park.

Landscape is not simply mentioned in her songs. It shapes them. The photographs needed to reflect that same connection to place.

My approach to musician portrait photography is relaxed and documentary in style. I avoid heavy posing and allow space for natural movement and expression. At the same time, I am deliberate with framing and composition.

I often shoot wider to include more of the environment. For artists like Detta, the landscape is not separate from the work. It supports the story and is embedded in the core of her music.

For this LP cover photography session on Dartmoor, the aim was to create album artwork that felt aligned with her identity as a contemporary folk artist. The river, woodland and tors were not used as decoration. They reinforce the themes already present in her songwriting.

About Detta Kenzie

Detta is an indie-folk artist blending folk roots with soul, minimalism & pop. With a Lyrical & bold dreamlike sound. With both Irish and Scottish heritage, she is committed to collecting, restoring and sharing songs passed down through the oral tradition.

A deep connection to the natural world runs through her work. Inspired by place names and specific locations across Britain, Ireland and Australia, her songwriting is rich with landscape. Themes of womanhood, grief, rebellion and rage thread through her deeply narrative songs.

As FATEA Magazine wrote:

“Detta Kenzie is a singer of siren songs with a voice likely to lure the unsuspecting onto the rocks.”

And Downend Folk & Roots described her as:

“Detta has the ability to fully inhabit the song, to wring from it every last emotion. Stunning.”
