Devon elopement photography | Wild, intimate & untamed weddings on Dartmoor

Devon elopement photography on Dartmoor | Gabe and Brett’s stone circle ceremony
Imagine wild open moors stretching endlessly around you. Just the two of you and possibly a small and intimate gathering of your nearest and dearest. A stone circle standing quietly in the Dartmoor landscape. The only sounds are nature, stonechats calling, your breath, and the stillness of a moment that feels completely yours. This is what eloping on Dartmoor in Devon truly feels like. Raw, untamed, deeply romantic and beautifully simple.
Why choose Dartmoor for your Devon elopement?
Dartmoor offers a rare sense of space and solitude. From ancient stone circles and flowing rivers to dramatic tors and wide open moorland, it gives you a ceremony that feels completely timeless. For couples who crave nature, quiet, and authenticity, a Dartmoor elopement is unmatched.
This is the unique and cinematic elopement of Gabe and Brett, they travelled all the way from Maine in the US, and honestly, they were two of the loveliest souls to ever step onto Dartmoor. I was so super stoked when they first got in touch and told me they wanted to plan a Dartmoor elopement and wanted my help to shape the whole experience. They didn’t just want beautiful photographs, they wanted a place that felt wild, rugged, steeped in history, and meaningful for their handfasting ceremony. Somewhere that felted grounded, calming and true to who they are as a couple.
They dreamed of open moors, ancient stone, big skies and that feeling of being completely immersed in the landscape, but it also needed to be accessible enough for their friends and family who were flying in from the States. Finding that balance is exactly where local knowledge matters. Together, we chose a location that felt remote and untouched, yet was still achievable for a group to reach without it becoming stressful or overwhelming.

Bovey Castle
Accommodation was another big part of their planning. They wanted somewhere special, somewhere that felt like part of the experience rather than just a place to base themselves. I sent them a list of my all time favourite local hotel options, in different styles and price ranges from my trusted Dartmoor and Devon recommendations. They chose the most luxurious and grand of them all – Bovey Castle. It’s always incredible to photograph there, and it gave their elopement a beautiful contrast between wild moorland adventure and refined elegance. I am on their recommended suppliers list and have been shooting large and small weddings at this beautiful location for the last 15 years. You will see lots of beautiful photos on my Instagram of locations around the grounds of Bovey Castle. I also always offer couple’s the opportunity to be photographed on Dartmoor….as why would you not want to go there! it’s only 10 minutes away! You can have it all
The logistics…..
Getting everyone from Bovey Castle to a remote Dartmoor location, then walking across open moorland to a stone circle, was no small logistical task. But every single one of their guests embraced it with excitement and adventure. There were a few nerves about the tiny Dartmoor lanes (and I’m fairly sure a little whiskey was involved to steady those!), but it all became part of the story and the experience.
And then there’s my favourite behind-the-scenes moment…
The friend who was performing their handfasting ceremony had her flight delayed. With no other way to reach Dartmoor in time, she ordered an Uber… from Heathrow to Dartmoor.
Yes, really. £400………absolute dedication and worth every penny to make sure Gabe and Brett had the ceremony they dreamed of.

This is what I love about Dartmoor elopements. They’re not just beautiful; they’re full of real stories, real effort, and real heart. Gabe and Brett’s day was adventurous, emotional, joyful, and deeply intentional, everything a Devon elopement should be.
For me, this is what Devon elopement photography is truly about: helping couples from anywhere in the world create something wild, meaningful and unforgettable in one of the most powerful landscapes the UK has to offer.
