Dartmoor Photography Walks: A Perfect Blend of Nature, Photography, and Connection
Today marked the start of something I’ve been dreaming about for a long time—my very first Dartmoor Photography Walk! As a photographer and lover of Dartmoor, I’ve always wanted to bring together like-minded people who share a passion for nature, photography, and the joy of exploring this incredible landscape. And what a perfect way to begin, even with Dartmoor’s famously unpredictable weather adding its own character to the day.
Our walk started in a quiet and serene north eastern corner of Dartmoor near Gidleigh, one of my personal favourite spots. This area is packed with photogenic features, including a stone circle, an ancient clapper bridge, intriguing stone rows, and a tor offering breathtaking perspectives. It’s a location that perfectly captures the magic and history of Dartmoor, and it gave us plenty of opportunities to practice our photography skills.
Driving to the meeting point, I passed through grey mist with occasional bursts of sunshine breaking through. The frosty ground sparkled in the changing light, and while the mist gave me a few moments of apprehension, I knew the trail well and had the OS Map app on my fully charged phone. It was a good reminder of how important it is to be prepared when exploring Dartmoor’s wild beauty, especially in unpredictable weather.
Dartmoor Weather
As we set off, the mist only added to the atmospheric charm of the landscape, creating layers of depth and mood for our photos. It was a relaxing amble, with plenty of time to pause, take in the views, and capture the details that make Dartmoor so unique. Being out on the moors with a group of photography enthusiasts and nature lovers was truly uplifting—a chance to connect over a shared appreciation for Dartmoor and all its beauty.
